Ruby, it’s complicated…

It’s week 5 in the Makers Academy course, which can mean only one thing. A new language called Javascript has walked into my life, and I’m having a bit of a Bridget Jones moment…

Dear Ruby,

You were my first love, and always will be. Things between us were simple. With your intuitive commands and lack of punctuation, I barely had to say anything, and you just knew.. You knew what I wanted. And even when things went wrong, you still treated me with Rspec. Your error messages helped me see the error of my ways, and when I was with you I learnt. I learnt so much.

But in the last week or two, I have to say, it’s started to feel, well, a bit too comfortable. We just know each other so well now that we end each other’s methods. And our cosy nights in with Sinatra on the stereo were starting to get a little dull.

I should let you know that I’ve met someone else.. let’s call him JS. Ruby, do you remember those special times when we made hashes together? With JS, EVERYTHING is kind of like a hash. He would never hide his feelings in a private method — what you see is what you get. He’s so confident too, and keeps going on about how 92% of sites on the web need him. Everyone says that he’s the future of the internet. Ruby, you’re so special to me, but I just don’t know how you can compete with that.

JS is not perfect though. For a start he has this weird obsession with semi-colons, and he takes brackets waaay too seriously. We never had that problem, did we Ruby? You couldn’t give a flying flip about brackets! Remember when we used to get drunk and wear them as moustaches? Oh how we laughed.. That would never happen with JS. One time I forgot to add brackets to a function call, and he was so upset he wouldn’t even speak to me. I tried asking his sister Jasmine for advice, but she didn’t tell me much. Between you and me Ruby, I find her a bit passive-aggressive.

I don’t think it’s over between us Ruby, but I think we need a break. I need to get to know JS a little better and understand his potential. I have changed our relationship status to “It’s complicated”…
