The Makers Academy Team

🌈 Happy National Coming Out Day! 🌈

Diversity is a core part of Makers Academy’s DNA. We’re very proud to attract a wide range of talent from all backgrounds — any age, gender, race, religion and sexuality, everyone’s welcome. Makers Academy strives to become a paragon of diversity in technology and we’re getting ever closer to that goal every day. In fact our most recent September cohort was 51% women, well above the industry average, which is partly down to our partnership with ThoughtWorks. We’re constantly looking for new ways to encourage more kinds of people to apply to the course and we’re only just getting started.

As Gatekeeper at Makers Academy I see first hand the variety of budding coders that pass through our doors and I’m in a fortunate position to ensure that our application process remains highly inclusive. Catering to the needs of every customer equally is important to us and we’re making great steps to ensure that everyone’s represented.

I’m beyond proud of the work that we’re doing here to promote inclusivity both internally and externally. We recently launched our @DiversityInTech Snapchat account to enable people everywhere to experience the things that Makers and friends are doing to diversify the industry and to celebrate the diversity that already exists in the tech industry today.

For our LGBTQ+ students we’ve launched ‘Code_Of_Colour’ — our internal group dedicated to LGBTQ+ support, discussion, welfare and events. We’re going to be looking at opening up Code_Of_Colour to prospective students very soon, so stay tuned for further details!

Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our differences, offer support to those who need it and show people everywhere that the tech industry is open to anyone.

Makers Academy teaches our students the art of software craftsmanship in only 12 weeks, we then help to find them their first jobs as software developers once they graduate. Diversity is a core part of our ethos — the Makers community is filled with incredible coders from every colour of the spectrum.
