Here at Makers, we’re excited about playing a role in creating a new generation of tech talent — one that has people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

However, we know that the number of women in the tech sector has remained stagnant over the past 10 years. And we know that role models play a part. This is why we’ve taken a number of measures to help diversify the tech industry of tomorrow.

For starters, we run an annual Women in Software Power List celebrating some of the top rising stars in the UK coding community. We also offer a women’s discount to those applying to train at Makers, as well as having a new series of scholarship options available. In short, we want to make women more visible and prominent in tech.

Our brand new ebook gathers some hard-won wisdom from six of our Makers alumni, in an easy and accessible format. It shares advice from six women, all of whom trained with Makers, and talks about the struggles they faced when they were starting out as junior developers and how they overcame them.

This candid and engaging read is inspiring and relevant to anyone who’s thinking of becoming a developer; those who have recently trained at Makers; or those who are simply interested in exploring a new career and are considering retraining into tech.

Here’s a sneak peek at the contents:

  • “If you want to change your life, you can.” (Chiaki Mizuta)
  • “Find yourself a community + set achievable goals.” (Kim Diep)
  • “Plan before you code!” (Kavita Kalaichelvan)
  • “You’re always re-evaluating what you think you know, so dealing with that is important.” (Ruth Earle)
  • “Be kind to yourself.” (Eithel Anderson)
  • “Don’t be afraid about putting yourself out there and to really aim for whatever company that interests you.” (Funmilayo Adewodu)
